    Background Information

Post by JazzyJ on Wed Dec 06, 2017 12:33 pm

The country of Areloma is ruled by a foreign, human emperor, Eliseo Urias, and governed by a Magocracy. Almost all of the upper 1% is human, and of that 1%, 20% can do some form of magic. Below that ruling class and aristocracy is the artisan class (read luxury goods), which is still mostly human, but the native peoples can also kind of get in there and make a comfortable legacy for themselves. Below that is the military class, below that are the shopkeepers and regular merchants, and then the peasantry.

The people who were overtaken are the Xohulu people, who are effectively half-elves. Just like with all imperialism, they get treated like dirt. Unlike real imperialism they aren’t being killed off by smallpox or sold into slavery, so, that’s a plus. But sometimes, commoners just… disappear. And of those that get disappeared, almost all of them are natives. Mysterious, but there’s a lot of magic and bickering within the aristocracy.

There is an opposing kingdom, Ichuloma, ruled by a local king, Neftali, farther away than the imperialists dared to go. Sometimes servants and peasantry run away to the king in the mountains. Maybe the emperor is reconsidering sending a crusade after the heathens in the mountains.

The natives also have magic, and it makes the magocracy and the aristocracy nervous. It doesn’t crop up quite as often, and when it does, the magic wielding youths usually get swept away to serve in a noble house, or a church, or something, to placate, silence, and possibly discredit them with their former peers.

    Magic: the Short Version

Post by JazzyJ on Thu Dec 07, 2017 4:21 pm

I'll write up and post a longer, more in-depth version if needed, but, for the time being, I really can't be bothered.

There are three "types" of magic: Wizardry, Chiruromancy, and Holy.

Wizardry: Schooled magic, usually taught at prestigious magical Academies, but not unheard of to be taught through private tutelage. Wizards are the sizable majority, as it is just a broad term for any kind of (non-divine) schooled magic. (As such, standard fantasy classes like wizards, warlocks, bards and psychics would be considered Wizards if they had proper schooling). Wizards magic comes from rotes and memorization. As such, wizards are limited only by their own minds and mental state for the amount of magic they know and how powerful the magic is.

Chiruromancy: "Body" magic. Chiruromancy comes from within, the mages' own blood, though the spell can be amplified by the blood of unsuspecting victims. Chiruromancy is taught privately, and is an open secret among the citizens of Areloma. Commonly referred to as Sorcerers (for the registered mages) or Witches (for the non-registered mages), they harness the power of flesh and blood to cast, power, and enhance magic. All wizards can turn to some base forms of chiruromancy (kill a guy, use his blood to power your magic!), but not all sorcerers/witches can learn to do magic as a wizard. (Class equivalents: sorcerers and witches [duh], bards, warlocks, psychics)

Holy: The rarest of magic, bestowed upon the chosen by the gods, many say. Only those mages blessed with holy magic can harness the power of creation. They are the only ones who can create something out of nothing, heal the sick and injured, and, in extremely rare cases, bring the dead back to life. Called Prophets, their favor is sought after by all. When they are taught at all, they are brought up as wizards, unless their talents for creation manifest early enough, in which case they are taught privately by other Prophets. There are only a handful of registered Prophets in the Magocracy, with a few more acolytes being tutored, but there are a fair amount of unknown Prophets among the lower classes, shielded from the corrupting touch of the Magocracy and the Church.
